Regular Admission: Minimum standards for regular admission:

  • The applicant must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • The applicant must be eligible to re-enter the last college or university s/he attended in good standing.
  • The applicant must provide must provide an official transcript showing a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75. The GPA must be based upon a four point scale.
  • The applicant must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours of undergraduate courses in the liberal arts including three (3) hours of biological science which includes content on human development. 
  • The applicant must submit a two page typed essay on why s/he would like to be a social worker. The applicant's response should reflect his/her motivation for social services, social work education, and a career in the profession; capacities for professional social work education; and discuss what s/he considers a major social issue and why this issue is important.
  • The applicant must submit three references, one of which should be from an undergraduate professor or supervisor of a paid or unpaid agency or organization or from persons familiar with the applicant's character and fitness for graduate school.
  • The applicant must complete applications for admission to the MSW Program and to the Graduate School.
  • An interview with the Admissions Committee may be required.

Advanced Standing Admission: Admission to advanced standing is determined on a selective basis according to the following criteria:

  • Applicant must be a graduate of a CSWE accredited baccalaureate program within the past five years.
  • A letter grade of “B” or better in all social work courses.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate coursework.
  • An interview with the Admissions Committee may be required.

Advanced Standing students must complete thirty semester hours in social work. This includes the following:

  1. SW 540: Diversity: Micro, Mezzo and Macro Perspectives
  2. Eighteen hours of concentration course work (Child and Family Welfare)
  3. Six hours of advanced field internship (450 hours in an agency placement)
  4. Three hours of advanced field seminar
