April 10, 2025

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State University celebrated its 75th Founder’s Day on Thursday, April 10, with a full day of events honoring the institution’s enduring legacy, commitment to service, and the pioneers who helped shape “The Valley.”

Under the theme “A Celebration of Service: A Legacy Unveiled,” the day began with a solemn Gravesite Ceremony at the Lois Aron Cultural Center-Chapel Grounds, paying tribute to founding president Dr. James Herbert White and First Lady Augusta Charter White. Presided over by MVSU Pioneer Mr. Floyd Bailey, the program included musical selections by the Valley Singers under the direction of Dr. Brandon T. Cash, an invocation by Rev. Dr. Maurice Lawson, and historical tributes presented by MVSU students and staff. President Dr. Jerryl Briggs, Sr., and Mrs. Auguster Wallace, Chief of Staff, laid wreaths.

The day's centerpiece was the 75th Annual Founder’s Day Convocation in the Walter Roberts Auditorium. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Charlie J. Tolliver, a decorated U.S. Army veteran, retired educator, and former president of the MVSU National Alumni Association, Inc. (2018–2021). A 1968 graduate of MVSU, Tolliver urged the audience to live lives rooted in service.

“Let us embrace the spirit of service—not just talked about, but lived,” Tolliver said. “We must use our time, talents, and treasures to uplift others.”

Referencing Muhammad Ali, he added, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your time on earth.”

The University Choir, directed by Dr. Brandon T. Cash, delivered a moving performance of “My Soul's Been Anchored in the Lord.” The service reached an emotional peak when Mrs. Cheryl Featherstone, Director of Student Service Learning, offered a powerful solo rendition of “For Every Mountain.”

Dr. Briggs presented Tolliver with an appreciation plaque, remembering the moment's significance.

“This university has produced outstanding graduates and continues to mold exceptional scholars,” said Briggs. “If you love Valley, MVSU will always love you back.”

Following Convocation, guests gathered for the Pioneer Luncheon in the H.M. Ivy Cafeteria’s Dining Hall IV. The luncheon, presided over by Interim Vice President for Advancement Mr. Stephen McDaniel, featured tributes to distinguished MVSU pioneers including Mr. Floyd Bailey, Mr. Reginal L. Henderson, Mrs. Melverta Henderson, Dr. Roy Hudson, Mrs. Mary Ann Jackson-Hollerman, Mr. Douglass F. Lyles, Dr. Chresteen Seals, and Dr. David H. Wicks.

Director of Communications Mr. Donell Maxie offered the blessing, and alumni, faculty, and family members participated in a candle-lighting and Litany of Remembrance led by Advancement team members.

As MVSU continues its yearlong 75th Anniversary celebration, the Founder’s Day events powerfully reflected the university’s roots and continued promise to transform lives through education, community, and legacy.
