ITTA BENA, MS - Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen L. McDaniel, CFRE (Certified Fund-Raising Executive), as the Interim Vice President for University Advancement, Government Affairs, and External Relations.
McDaniel brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in fundraising, marketing, and university advancement.
With over four decades of expertise, McDaniel has held senior-level positions at several prestigious institutions, including Lincoln University PA, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), Norfolk State University, Alcorn State University, Fayetteville State University, Alabama A & M University, North Carolina A & T University, Tuskegee University, Atlanta Technical College, and the University of Maryland at College Park.
Dr. Jerryl Briggs, Sr., the eighth President of MVSU, expressed his optimism for the institution's future under McDaniel's guidance. McDaniel leads with hope and positivity.

McDaniel began his professional fundraising career as an integral member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Capital Campaign team in 1980. Over his 18-year tenure at UNCF, he served as the Assistant Director of the Capital Resources Development Campaign and later as a Regional Telethon Coordinator. He concluded his service at UNCF by leading the Atlanta, GA, area office for six years.
McDaniel's influence extends beyond the United States, with significant international contributions to his name. His work as a philanthropy consultant in Niamey, Niger, in 1997, and his evaluation of fundraising readiness at the Kigali Institute of Science, Technology, and Management in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2001, have greatly influenced his approach to fundraising and university advancement showcasing his global perspective and experience.
McDaniel earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a certificate in managing institutional advancement from the University of Chicago. He has actively participated in various professional organizations, including the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).
In his new role at MVSU, McDaniel will oversee the Office of University Advancement and play a crucial role in strengthening relationships with alumni, donors, and external partners. He will also oversee the Office of Communications and Marketing, Alumni Affairs, and WVSD Radio. His leadership in these areas will undoubtedly enhance the university's government affairs and external relations efforts, helping to ensure the future of MVSU.

My primary focus will be strengthening our relationships with alumni, donors, and community partners and expanding our outreach efforts to garner more support for the university,” said McDaniel.
“By implementing fundraising strategies and fostering a culture of philanthropy, I aim to enhance our financial resources, supporting scholarships, academic programs, and infrastructure improvements. Together, we will build on MVSU's strong foundation and drive forward initiatives to ensure continued growth and success for our students and the university,” said McDaniel.
McDaniel also serves as the administrative trustee of the Charles B. Wright Charitable Trust and the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation Board of Directors secretary. He is an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He chairs the PBS Impact Foundation development committee and the Capital Development Committee. McDaniel resides in Atlanta, Georgia, and has two adult sons.
