Mississippi Valley State University students competed with and against STEM students nationwide during the 2024 Association of Computer and Information Science/Engineering Departments at Minority Institutions (ADMI) symposium, which was hosted in Atlanta, Georgia.
Themed "Science Gateways and High-Performance Computing."
The symposium highlighted undergraduate and graduate research interested in computing innovations.
During the event, MVSU student Chidinma Chinedu won third place in the Undergraduate Student Oral Presentation Competition for her presentation on "Smart Course Advisor."
Finally, MVSU students were recognized for their participation in the Code-a-thon Competition. These students included Chidinma Chinedu, Javid Ibrahimov, Shovkat Zeynalli, Anthony Nwafor, AbdulBaqiy Diyaolu, Teniola Oluwaseyitan, Eyimofe Ajagunna, Bakri Diyaolu, and Alexandria Henderson.
The students competed in highly competitive events against students from several schools, including Hampton University, Florida A&M University, Norfolk State University, Morehouse College, Claflin University, Spelman College, and Winston-Salem State University.
The event featured an MVSU graduate, Dr. Christopher Lanclos, who provided positive insights that captivated, challenged, and motivated the students to strive for excellence with a purpose.
Dr. Lanclos served as the awards banquet co-speaker for the symposium. His discussion focused on students maintaining their focus and making sacrifices to excel academically. He used his journey at MVSU as an example to show how he overcame adversities and ultimately achieved his goals. Outside of providing an excellent example for his children, his primary motivation was an individual who could assist others who share the same journey and background. Some key highlights from his discussion were "establish a support group," "set goals and challenge yourself to achieve them," and "no path to the finish line is a straight line."
ADMI was founded in August 1989 and established as a national organization dedicated to exploring and providing remedies to the educational issues in computer/information science and computer engineering that confront minority higher education institutions.
