Students of Mississippi Valley State University,
This is a time to act with an abundance of caution.
First and foremost, I want you all to know that our University is working diligently as a team to ensure your safety and that you receive the quality education you so rightfully deserve. The University has begun taking precautionary measures such as distance learning, altering the operations of the cafeteria so that it can serve the needs of the students safely, and providing students with updated information via MVSU News, text messaging and social media. In fact, department chairs and area directors are currently putting their plans of action in motion to show that you, the students, are our number one priority during these trying times. Students, this is no laughing matter and it is imperative that you take the necessary precautions for your safety and the safety of those around you.
MVSU student body, I would like to also bring some clarity to some rumors that have been circulating suggesting that the University is forcing students off-campus. I am here to let you all know that those speculations could not be further from the truth. Dr. Briggs, in his address, stated that because we have students who may not have the means to get home immediately, that the University will remain operational and accommodate those students. In fact, both the cafeteria and the residence halls are open. However, we, as a University, are also strongly encouraging those students who are able to go home to do so for their own safety.
With what is going on, each of us is charged with doing our part to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and providing access remotely to University services is the best way to accomplish this task. Our focus is on minimizing the spread of COVID-19 by reducing social encounters and practicing social distancing.
What can you do to protect yourself?
Stay home. Do not socialize in groups and limit contact with others. If you exhibit any of the symptoms related to COVID-19—fever, cough and shortness of breath—contact your health care provider and call them before you arrive. Practice good hygiene by covering your coughs and sneezes, washing your hands often, and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Avoid public areas and public transportation. Clean all “high touch” surfaces daily*.
