Mississippi Valley State University Women's basketball player Jaylia Reed recently received fantastic news. Reed attended and played at Southern Arkansas University Tech last season and was notified that her jersey will be displayed at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame displays different jerseys in its Ring of Honor to acknowledge standout players from all levels of girls' high school and women's collegiate basketball from the previous season.
The Ring of Honor is a favorite at the Hall of Fame and has become one of our most popular exhibits. Not only does the Ring of Honor provide a colorful backdrop to the Hall of Fame's many archives, but it is also the way the Hall recognizes young women's basketball players for their achievements in the sport.
Currently, the Ring of Honor consists of over 100 jerseys hanging from the rafters of the back rotunda at the Hall of Fame. By acknowledging these young athletes, the Hall of Fame can fulfill their mission to "honor the past, celebrate the present, and promote the future" of women's basketball.
The display includes jerseys of the top high school and college players from the previous season. The Ring of Honor has displayed jerseys from the best players worldwide, including Candace Parker, Sue Bird, Kelsey Plum, Breanna Stewart, and Aja Wilson.
During the 2022-2023 season, Reed averaged 18.3 points per game and shot 46.3% from the field while also shooting 38.79% from three-point range. Her 18.3 points per game were the most by any SAU Tech player, and she also had 3.8 steals per game and 4.3 assists.
Her three-point shooting was among the top qualified 20 players at the NJCAA Division II level. She was 23rd in the nation in points per game. Reed had nine games last season where she scored at least 20 points.
Reed was named an NJCAA Division II first-team All-American, a Region II MVP, and a first-team All-Region player for her contributions and stellar performances on the court. Her leadership helped the Lady Rockets to finish the 2022-2023 college basketball season with an overall record of 20-3.
The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame opened in 1999 and is the only facility dedicated to all levels of women's basketball. For more information on the Ring of Honor or the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, visit www.wbhof.com.
