MVSU Slated to Hold its Annual Black History Convocation, Ty Pinkins to serve as keynote speaker

Mississippi Valley State University will celebrate Black History Month with its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Black History Convocation.

The theme for this year’s event is “Black Resistance,” which will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023, at the H.G. Carpenter Building in the Walter Roberts Auditorium.

The keynote speaker will be Mississippi Delta native Ty Pinkins, a veteran, lawyer, author, and former Communications Aide to the President of the United States.

Mitchell Shares “Life Lessons” with MVSU Grads during Fall 2022 Commencement

ITTA BENA — Mississippi Valley State University graduates received encouraging words on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, from Anthony “Tony” Mitchell, who shared with students four life lessons to help correct them for where they are going.

Nearly 130 graduates participated in the Fall 2022 exercises, including Mitchell, who explained to the audience that he never had the opportunity to participate in his commencement exercise.

Wayne Compton is an accomplished young man who, at 22 years old, has overcome severe loss but has persevered to make sure his "can do" is always greater than his "can't do."

When hearing Compton's story, several questions may arise. Questions like; "Can a person suffer from tragedy and triumph simultaneously? How does one ultimately triumph after tragedy? Can tragedy lead to triumph?"
