MVSU remembers former band director Russell Boone, Sr.
ITTA BENA, Miss.—From two performances in the Indy 500 (1963 & 1964) and being the first Historically Black College & University (HBCU) extended an invitation to the Rose Bowl Parade in 1965 and again in 1968, to performances during the 1968 Mississippi Governor’s inaugural parade and the 1969 inaugural parade for the United States President—Mississippi Valley State University’s band has had quite the storied history.
MVSU’s Brooks named to MS Historical Society Board of Directors
ITTA BENA, Miss.—A Mississippi Valley State University administrator was recently appointed to the board of an organization designed to preserve Mississippi history.
Dr. La Shon F. Brooks, MVSU’s chief of staff and legislative liaison, has been selected to serve on the Mississippi Historical Society Board of Directors.
Newsome named MVSU’s Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
ITTA BENA, Miss.—Mississippi Valley State University is pleased to announce Dr. Abigail S. Newsome as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
An MVSU alumna, Newsome brings to the position more than 20 years of extensive and diverse experience in academia as a researcher, professor and administrator.
Recent MVSU grad enjoys coveted internship with NASA
ITTA BENA, Miss.— A recent Mississippi Valley State University graduate has been enjoying a coveted internship opportunity with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
MVSU Computer Science graduate Jarvis Riley worked with the organization this summer and was extended the opportunity to continue interning throughout the Fall as a Data Analyst intern.
MVSU alum encourages “self-directed shift” in new book
ITTA BENA, Miss.— Mississippi Valley State University alumnus Rickey Lewis experienced a positive “self-directed shift” in his life, and now he has made it his mission to help others do the same.
The former MVSU student-athlete and professional baseball player recently released a book entitled, “The Self-Directed Shift”, which has been adopted by MVSU’s Freshmen Year Experience (FYE) program as this semester’s common read.
Mobile COVID-19 testing available at MVSU Aug. 31
ITTA BENA, Miss.—Residents of Leflore County and surrounding communities can be tested for COVID-19 next week at Mississippi Valley State University as the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the Mississippi State Department of Health continue efforts to stem virus transmission by setting up one-day, drive-through collection sites.
Testing at MVSU will be held Monday, August 31, 2020, at the Rice-Totten Football Stadium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

MVSU’s Golden among 2020 recipients of APSA’s Special Projects Fund
ITTA BENA, Miss.—The American Political Science Association (APSA) recently announced a total of $140,000 in Special Projects Fund grants awarded to six teams of political scientists made up of 33 established and early career scholars representing 29 academic institutions, including Mississippi Valley State University.
