Administrator Receives Honorary Doctorate While Visiting Eurasian Country

Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs Kathie Stromile Golden received an honorary doctorate during a trip to solidify the relationship between MVSU and Caucasus International University (CIU) in Tblisi, Georgia. Dr. Golden had just finished delivering a lecture on the roll of small-state and non-state actors in the contemporary world order when administrators from CIU surprised her with the honor.

“I was taken completely by surprise,” she said.

Ford Conducts Research at the University of Connecticut

Dr. Deborah Ford, Professor of English, received a 2014 summer research grant from Mississippi Valley State University to work in the archives of the Dodd Center at the U of Connecticut on the papers of Allen Polite, an expatriate African American poet.

MVSU Celebrates International Week April 13 – 17

During the second full week of April, Mississippi Valley State will begin hosting several activities for its 2015 International Week. The week’s activities are meant to highlight the international diversity of the campus, exposing members of the university and the greater community to cultures and ideas that they may not be familiar with.

“We hope that International Week will encourage people to think more broadly about the world in which we live,” said Dr. Kathie Golden, associate vice president of academic affairs at Mississippi Valley State.

MVSU Student Among 12 Nationwide Recipients of Tom Joyner Foundation Scholarship

Junior Vester Waters was one of 12 students nationwide selected to receive a scholarship from the Tom Joyner Foundation for his commitment to fighting hunger.

The foundation partnered with Denny’s to invite students from any of the nation’s HBCUs to apply for the $2,500 scholarships. Applicants had to write an essay of 200 words or less describing the most memorable activity or community service project they have done to combat hunger.

Three Valley Singers Admitted to Musical Training Program in Germany

Three Valley students will travel to Germany this summer as part of a program intended to train musicians for careers in musical performance.

All three students are members of the “Valley Singers,” the exclusive group of singers chosen to represent the university at special events such as Green and White Day and the First Lady’s Luncheon.
