ITTA BENA, Miss.—Mississippi Valley State University has been designated as a champion of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2017.
Valley will be joining a growing global effort among businesses, government agencies, colleges and universities, associations, nonprofit organizations and individuals to promote online safety awareness.
Recognized every October, NCSAM was created as a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure all digital citizens have the resources needed to stay safe and secure online while also protecting their personal information.
“Cybersecurity is one of the nation’s biggest concerns and will be in the 21st Century. However, it is exciting to see MVSU becoming a university that is educating and training people to be more aware of the security risks and how it could possibly impact the daily lives of administrators, faculty, staff and the entire student body,” said Christopher I. G. Lanclos.
"The Champion program is a vital part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month’s ongoing success. 870 organizations joined last year, a 24-percent increase from the year before,” said Michael Kaiser, NCSA’s executive director. We are thankful to our 2017 Champion organizations for their support and commitment to our shared responsibility of promoting cybersecurity and online safety awareness."
The Mathematics Computer and Information Science Department (MCIS) at MVSU has become a huge advocate of the cybersecurity centered university.
This year, the department implemented a new Cyber Security curriculum track in Computer Science. The Cyber Security track is designed to teach security principles and practical applications in computing.
This track will further help students to learn about computer security and how to defend their networks. Courses such as Introduction to Cyber Security and Network Defense have been incorporated into the curriculum. The department has also started the development of MVSU’s Cybersecurity Center, which will be functional by the end of this semester.
