Mississippi Valley State University to Celebrate 75th Anniversary at Founder's Day Convocation

April 9, 2025

Mississippi Valley State University will mark a significant milestone in its storied history as it hosts the 75th Annual Founder’s Convocation on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 11 a.m. in the Walter Roberts Auditorium inside the H.G. Carpenter Building.

Held under the theme “A Celebration of Service: A Legacy Unveiled,” the event is a centerpiece of MVSU’s yearlong 75th anniversary celebration and will honor the university’s enduring commitment to academic excellence, service, and community uplift.

This year’s keynote address will be delivered by Mr. Charlie J. Tolliver, a proud alumnus and past president of the MVSU National Alumni Association, Inc. (2018–2021). A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Tolliver is a decorated U.S. Army veteran, a retired educator, and a long-standing advocate for youth and underserved communities.

Tolliver earned his degree from MVSU in 1968 after transferring from Utica Junior College and has since built a career centered on servant leadership, echoing the values instilled at “The Valley.” From leading educational institutions to serving on national and regional boards, Tolliver’s dedication to uplifting others is a testament to the power of an MVSU education.

“Mr. Tolliver embodies the spirit of Valley,” said Donell Maxie, Convocation Committee member. “His life’s work reflects the legacy of service and leadership that this institution was built upon 75 years ago,” he added.

As the university reflects on its rich history from its founding in 1950 to its transformation into a hub for innovation and social impact, this year’s convocation will celebrate the past and cast a bold vision for the future.

The event is open to the public and will unite students, alums, faculty, staff, and community members in a unified tribute to MVSU’s legacy.
