JACKSON, Miss.—Outstanding students and faculty members from 34 Mississippi public and private universities and colleges were recently honored Monday, March 2, at the state capitol during the annual Higher Education Appreciation Day—Working for Academic Excellence (HEADWAE) program.

HEADWAE was established by legislative resolution to honor individual academic achievement and the overall contribution of the state’s public and private institutions of higher learning. 

ITTA BENA, Miss.—A Mississippi Valley State University faculty member was recently recognized as one of the “best and brightest” the region has to offer. 

Dr. Latonya Garner, chair of Mississippi Valley State University’s Mathematics, Computer and Information Sciences (MCIS) Department, was recently honored by The Delta Business Journal as one of the Top Minority Business Leaders. 

ITTA BENA, Miss.—The Mississippi Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning recently celebrated Black History Month by holding its annual Diversity and Inclusion Awards ceremony during its February meeting in Jackson.

During the ceremony, campus and community leaders were recognized for their efforts in advancing diversity and encouraging understanding and respect on their campuses.

“We are in the midst of an election cycle that’s going to require you. The country is in the midst of a transition and it’s up to you,” he added.

ITTA BENA, Miss.—The Department of Fine Arts at Mississippi Valley State University will present a faculty recital featuring bass trombonist Dr. Edward Morse and pianist Dr. Lawrence Goldman, Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. 

The free performance will be hosted in the Little Theater of MVSU’s Walter Sillers Fine Arts Center. The general public is invited to attend. 

ITTA BENA, Miss.— Mississippi Valley State University will celebrate Black History Month with its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Black History Convocation.

This year’s event, themed “African Americans and the Vote”, will be held Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Carver A. Randle Auditorium, located in the William Butts Social Science Building.

ITTA BENA, Miss.— The Division of Academic Affairs at Mississippi Valley State University is pleased to announce Dr. Micah A. Rueber as its 2019 Humanities Teacher of the Year recipient.

Each year, the Mississippi Humanities Council recognizes October’s designation of Arts and Humanities Month by bestowing Humanities Teacher Awards to outstanding faculty in traditional humanities fields at colleges and universities across the state.

The event is slated from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 18 in the R.W. Harrison Complex.

ITTA BENA, Miss.—The Mississippi Court of Appeals will convene on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena at 1 p.m. Feb. 13. A three-judge panel will hear oral arguments in a criminal appeal at the W.A. Butts Social Science Building Auditorium.
