March 10, 2025

Floyd Williams, a proud graduate of Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU), has built an extraordinary career spanning both military and federal government service. Born as one of 15 children, he overcame significant challenges, balancing farm work with part-time high school attendance before pursuing higher education. His journey led him to MVSU, where he graduated with honors in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and earned a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force (USAF).

Williams' military career took him across the globe, from assisting President Ronald Reagan's advance arrival team at March Air Force Base in California to serving at Thule Air Base in Greenland, just south of the North Pole. His service was crucial in safeguarding national security, and when facing extreme conditions, he remained steadfast in his mission. His final assignment at Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts, saw him as Deputy Program Manager for Logistics, overseeing a multi-billion-dollar electronic acquisition program vital to the nation's defense.

Following his distinguished military service, Williams transitioned into the federal workforce. He was pivotal at the National Weather Service, managing a multi-million-dollar system crucial for aviation safety. Later, at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), he rose to the senior executive rank of GM-15, leading efforts to maintain national telecommunications continuity. His work frequently brought him to Capitol Hill, where he tirelessly advocated for funding to strengthen the country's communication infrastructure.

Reflecting on his 47-year career, Williams attributes much of his success to his mentorship and education at MVSU. He fondly recalls the rigorous academics and the invaluable life skills that shaped him into the leader he became.

Today, he shares his journey with his wife and fellow MVSU alumna Shirley (Kirk) Williams, Class of '75. Together, they take pride in their legacy and the accomplishments of their two sons, Michael and Allen.

Mississippi Valley State University celebrates Floyd Williams's remarkable contributions. His dedication and achievements exemplify the spirit of the Valley, and his story inspires current and future generations of MVSU students.
